La Quebrada de Humahuaca comprises some 170 kilometers of valleys and mountains, drawn from south to north, beginning at 39Kms of San Salvador de Jujuy, on National Route 9. Landscape full of culture, preserved within its walls the legacy of ethnic groups who lived there, whose beliefs, rites and customs still resonate as a constant echo. Located between 2000 and 4000 meters above the sea level, and crossed by the Rio Grande, dyed in a wide range of minerals that make up their saws, and declared World Heritage by UNESCO. This stream of indescribable beauty and inexhaustible cultural force, is the starting point of a route always attractive and variable.
Between the passages through the Quebrada Circuit we find the Volcano village, the old chapel Tumbaya; and Purmarca tradional fair. Posta de Hornillos and its Museum of the eighteenth century; Maimará that with its shining carnival, and the traditional Tilcara Aboriginal Pucara together with Huacalera and enactment of the crossing of the Tropic of Capricorn, and the colonial Humahuaca.
Since the arrival of the Spanish, and from the construction of the church, the town nestled in the bottom of the river basin Huasamayo. This originates in the foothills of the Sierra de Tilcara, 2,900 m. As, in its middle allows irrigated crops that take advantage of terraces built in ancient times. Below the bed is encased in crossing a mountain wall hard rock, awesome place that has received the suggestive name of Garganta del Diablo. Until there, comes a mountain road from where you can see a long stretch of the creek. Tilcara settled on the final stretch of the river Huasamayo in whose center stands a conoid torrenticio truly of colossal size: 1.5 km long and 110 m of altitude. Its location is exceptional because it is the only town in the creek that is located on the east bank of river.
The name of Tilcara reminds the indianas that developed the most important fortress of the place. In 1593, Francisco de Argañaraz and Mujia, founder of the city of San Salvador de Jujuy, was awarded the task of Tilcara and it passed to his descendants. While the heirs of Argañaraz were lords of the task, the institution of chieftaincy remained in the heirs of Viltipoco, an Indian leader who led the omaguacas in his confrontation in 1594 with the conqueror Argañaraz. Chiefs named Viltipoco, Chapora and Vilti ruled the tribe at least until the late seventeenth century.
The town flourished during the eighteenth century. In 1773 was divided into two parish of Humahuaca and the new parish, which under-day from Huacalera to Leon, was based in Tumbaya. In 1777 it was decided that the priest remains in Tilcara and set him to aide in Tumbaya. Tilcara in 1860 was officially designated as the seat of the parish.
Since the beginning of this century the town became a resort of importance to Jujuy and, later, in resort that attracted many different people from around the country. Pucara also began in the research and excavations have continued until today.
As a result, both made cultural-tourism and scientific research, have meant that, at present, the ethnic and cultural Tilcareño population is very diverse, including coyas highland omaguacas descendants of the middle class de Jujuy Researchers at the Institute of Anthropology of Buenos Aires and artisans and travelers from around the country or abroad.
